Shaw, 61, operated a marijuana farm on the 1200 block of 49th Ave. in Oakland—just blocks from an area named in honor of his younger brother Todd, a West Coast hip-hop pioneer known for his songs “Blow the Whistle,” “Gettin' It,” and “The Ghetto.”
The elder Shaw is thought to have been the target of a robbery on Jan. 29 in the incident that led to his death. Multiple assailants attempted to forcefully enter his business by way of car-ramming, leading Shaw to flee before the suspects opened fire, striking him multiple times.
Shaw was thereafter pronounced dead at Highland Hospital, leading to an outpouring of support for the Shaw family from around the country.
Though he did not directly address the shooting publicly, Too Short posted two videos on social media after the news broke. They featured the critically acclaimed rapper sitting in a vehicle while visibly mourning his brother’s passing.
“Aint really replying to a lot of texts or answering calls right now. I can’t,” he wrote in a caption.
The brothers’ father, Anderson F. Shaw, a prominent Los Angeles businessman with ties to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, likewise did not speak on details following the shooting but shared a photo of the family on social media.

One day after the arrest of Jackson, Wayne Shaw’s funeral was held on Friday in Oakland at New Beginnings Community Church, where friends and family shared memories of the late entrepreneur and community figure.
“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord,” said his aunt during remarks given during the ceremony. “Fly, Wayne, fly.”
Too Short, who was active in the Bay Area over the weekend for special fan events during NBA All-Star Weekend, was present at his brother's funeral and also gave remarks.
Anyone with information on the Shaw shooting is asked to contact the OPD Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821 or the tip line at (510) 238-7950. Those with videos or photos that could assist with the investigation are asked to email cidvideos@oaklandca.gov.
